Bears v Outlaws

Edgbaston… Saturday September 2nd…

Outlaws won by 22 runs

Ticket: £71Programme: £6

The final game of the day, the final, and Nottinghamshire Outlaws defeated Birmingham Bears to become the 2017 Natwest T20 Blast Champions…

The Bears started well, Chris Woakes taking three early wickets (including Alex Hales, clean bowled, for 7), to reduce the Outlaws to 30/3. However, as the game progressed the run rate gradually increased, with Brendan Taylor and Samit Patel putting on 132 for the fourth wicket. The final over of the innings was to be crucial, Oli Stone was hit for 23 runs, including sixes from his final two deliveries. Psychologically, a catchable 175 had become a far more difficult 191…

It was always going to be a big ask, and it always felt as if the Bears were going to fall short. Sam Hain made 72 from 44 deliveries to hold the innings together but as the wickets frequently fell, and despite some big hits from Colin de Grandehomme, the Bears were unable to accelerate in the second half of their innings. They finished on 168/8, and the Outlaws were champions…

Bias aside, across the course season, Nottinghamshire were worthy winners…

Outlaws v Hampshire

Edgbaston… Saturday September 2nd…

Outlaws won by 23 runs

Ticket: £71Programme: £6

A win or the  Nottinghamshire Outlaws over Hampshire in the second T20 Blast semi-final…

It didn’t always looks as if an Outlaws was on the cards. Nottinghamshire lost Alex Hales early, and Riki Wessels top scored with 48. Once the 20 overs had been completed, Hampshire were left with a more than achievable target of 170…

Hampshire started well and looked to be on course to complete a comfortable win, but then they collapsed. James Vince was dismissed for 56, caught by Brendan Taylor off the bowling of Steven Mullaney with the score at 120/5. This rapidly became 146 all out…

So North v South Part Two ended in another win for the North. A result which meant that, for the fourth consecutive season, the final would be an all Northern affair…

Trent Bridge… Sat August 5th…

Outlaws won by 5 wickets

A day of records, made and missed…

Nottinghamshire scored 106/1 from the Powerplay, a T20 World Record. Whilst Alex Hales came within a 6 of equalling Chris Gayle’s world record for the fastest T20 century, being caught in the outfield by Stuart Poyter (when attempting that six), on 95 from 30 deliveries…

Earlier, Paul Coughlin and Ryan Pringle had pushed Durham towards a respectable total, adding 40 runs in the final two overs…

Durham’s bowling however, the first over summed it up. Usman Arshad was taken out of the attack after only two deliveries, both waist-high no balls. He was replaced by Paul Coughlin who then had to leave the field after only 5 balls following a nasty knock to the hand, Jack Burnham bowling the final delivery of the over…

Cameron Steel did have a hattrick opportunity though, at a point where the slogging appeared to have gone to the Outlaws’ heads……
