There’s watching football, and then there’s watching Newcastle United. And every once in a while we’re treated to one of those days that remind us why it’s different, and why it is that we persevere. Today was one of those days. Our home form being what it is, I’d travelled in hope more than expectation but this was a thoroughly deserved win…

We imposed ourself early, David De Gea pulling off a fantastic save from Jonjo Shelvey. Gradually they eased themselves into tha game, but when they did get chances, debutant goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was more than up to the task…

Into the second half, and you began to sense that a win was a possibility; when Matt Ritchie fired home on 65 minutes, that possibility became a reality. When that ball hit the net, the noise was deafening; and when the crowd are up, there isn’t an atmosphere like it anywhere else in the country…

The last ten nminutes was constant pressure, corner after corner, save after save. For once though, we held on. It may be a cliche, but we really did just seem to want it more than they did…

A creditable draw…

Although we didn’t really offer a great deal of an attacking threat…

Outside Old Trafford…

A first trip to Old Trafford since 1998. What can I say? It’s very big, it’s very corporate and it’s very quiet…

So… We threw it away in the most ridiculous fashion, late on, 2,500 empty seats due to ‘members only’ fan-fleecing nonsense…

Members-Only… Well, I can only assume that Fat Mike isn’t a member, as he didn’t appear to be in attendance. To be fair to the guy though, apparently he’s very busy for the whole of March. So busy in fact, that he declined the opportunity to appear before the Scottish Affairs Committee to answer questions about 200 job losses at a Sports Direct owned retailer, or to discuss his liberal use of zero hours contracts.

I Want Curly Hair Too…

Anyway, the game, the £82 game…? They were below-par, we were distinctly average, there was some spitting, we gifted them a goal, we lost.

I remember what these games used to be like, what they used to mean when we had something to play for. This was just a another case of going through the motions, I’m not even angry anymore, I really can’t be bothered…

Still, at least we haven’t got an F.A. Cup Quarter-Final to look forward to at the weekend, I hope Manchester United realise the potential relegation threat that they’re taking on…

Spleen vented…

First Half Action…

One massive plus point though, one that puts all of this ranting into perspective… Jonas Gutiérrez, from Buenos Aires, Spiderman. When Coloccini handed him the captain’s armband, I swear to God I must have had something in my eye…
