Stamford Bridge… Saturday February 13th… 5.30pm

Attendance: 41,622

Ticket: £55 – Programme: £3

Another embarrassment on an early evening in West London…

It was never going to end well. I’m not a fan of the the Saturday 5.30pm games at the best of times, particularly when they’re in London. There’s always that nagging feeling in the back of my mind about trains, generally due to the length of the post-match queues for the Underground. Self preservation has become a much stronger instinct than any misplaced loyalty to this shower, in the end I was glad to have an excuse to leave early…

So… I didn’t see the last 20 minutes, it was 4-0 when I left, and it was 5-1 and over by the time I got signal back at St. Pancras Station. I managed to make it back for the 19:58 to Leicester, and that was the highlight of a dismal afternoon…

It’s Me, Diego Costa, Being All Christ-Like… Anyone Want To Buy Some Tyres…?

The game was pretty much over in nine minutes, and dead in seventeen. Much of the rest of the evening was spent looking at my watch, praying for it to be over. What remained involved a fruitless effort to shut out the sound of the idiotic Adam Johnson chanting; not quite sure what it has to do with us or how it helps anyone involved..?

I couldn’t really estimate the percentage of our support who felt the need to participate (there was some casual homophobia in evidence too) but I’ve never felt so disconnected from a Newcastle away following in my life. I don’t imagine that I was the only one…

Second Half Action: A Rare Newcastle Attack…

Back to the football, briefly. Apparently McClaren appeared to be in denial post-match, grinning and talking up our chances. I didn’t see any of the post-mortems though, I’d already watched (most of) it once, that was enough. I could see absolutely no point in wallowing in it…

So what happens next..? We don’t have a game for two and half weeks. It’s our last chance to sack McClaren. He has to go, now… But we all know that he won’t…

Attendance: 41,612

Firstly, pricing… I agree wholeheartedly with pretty much everything that has been said on social media about the ridiculous ticket prices at Chelsea… But, as a member, I’m right at the bottom of the pecking order for tickets for away games and have to grab them when I can. Members don’t get loyalty points either, but that’s a story for another day…

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned on numerous occasions, away game attendance is a bit of a midlife crisis related activity for me so I hadn’t been to Stamford Bridge since 1998 (a friendly face appearing on the programme cover)… I still don’t like the place… They’re still an arrogant bunch who (you would hope) in their more lucid moments must realise that, without Roman’s financial doping, would be just another Spurs… And that ‘Parklife’ nonsense before the game, just when you think you couldn’t dislike them any more than you already do…

Outside Stamford Bridge…

Anyway, we did play pretty well for forty minutes, without ever really looking like scoring (even Sissoko’s shot was a half-chance). Cabella (in the first-half) was a different player, if this becomes more than a blip then you have to seriously question what Pardew was doing with him…

Usual story though, once they scored, we reverted to type, and it was over…

Newcastle United 2 Chelsea 1

Ticket: £39 – Programme: £3

Memories first… I first started going to the match with my dad during the 1980/81 season, we went to a couple of F.A. Cup games (Luton Town / Exeter City ), which I guess didn’t really give a particularly fair representation to my eight year old self of the average match day experience at the time. My first ever league game was on 28th March 1981 against Chelsea, a 1-0 win in front of a crowd of 17,297; a little closer to the reality of the period. A little extra significance being thrown in as it was only time that my mam came to the game with us too…

Outside St. James’…

Not a lot to say really, I guess it’s all been said already but we have to enjoy days like this, heaven knows they’re few and far between. When the board went up signalling six minutes of injury time, the noise that built within SJP was just incredible. It just proves what’s been said time and time again, we don’t have unrealistic expectations, just give us something to shout for. Imagine what the noise would be like if we picked up a trophy, Capital One Cup included. So then, Alan Pardew, it’s over to you; White Hart Lane next Wednesday night, a packed away end, choose wisely….
