About…

An exiled Newcastle United fan, living in the Midlands, with a recently reignited passion for football…

The Past….

Early Eighties…

When most of the kids I grew up with wanted to be Kenny Dalglish, I wanted to be Alan Shoulder (well for about a week, then I wanted to be Chris Waddle)… Started going with my dad in 1981 aged eight (Luton Town, FA Cup 4th Round, 2-1, Ray Clarke, Mick Martin). Season ticket holder from 1983-2000, attended most away games between 1989 and 1998…

Interesting times… Obscurity, Keegan, Promotion, a helicopter, Waddle / Beardsley / Gascoigne sold, relegation, defeat to the Mackems in the play-offs, near relegation to the Third Division. Keegan again, promotion, so close in 1996, The Halls and Shepherd got greedy, Keegan gone. Dalglish worked his ‘magic’, an FA Cup Final disaster, Gullit took the blame, another FA Cup Final disaster, SBR steadied the ship. 2000 ground expansion, the club wanted my seat for a Sports Bar, disillusioned, stopped going…

Anyway, some time passed, I moved away and got a bit older but then I began to miss it. Started going to a few games in 2009, the relegation / promotion fights rekindled my interest. Followed that up with a few visits to my new local team, Nuneaton Town, and gradually the interest started to come back…

Having a bit of a mid-life crisis I think, so I decided to use the 2014/15 season as an opportunity to revisit some old haunts and to discover a few new ones…

Attempted to take in a game very weekend, writing a few words and taking a few pictures along the way…

The Present…

Mid Forties…

2014/15 became 2015/16, became 2016/7 and so on. After Rafa’s arrival, away tickets became harder to come by so Carlisle United and Birmingham City were added to my roster to fill those blank Saturdays. Cricket has begun to play a bigger part too, Warwickshire becoming my adopted county, unless they’re playing Durham of course…

The Future…

Who knows… The novelty of travelling has definitely worn off, as can be seen by the reduction in the number of long haul trips. The motivation most definitely isn’t what it was, particularly when the the dark winter nights start to draw in. Most importantly, the cost can be prohibitive. But for the time being though, I’m going to keep going, I like to think that I’ll know when it’s time to stop…

And as long as this is still a thing, then this is just somewhere for me to keep a record. No great insight into formations, tactics, signings or the politics of football. A digital scrap book, I suppose…
