I had a good rant last week about the current structure of Newcastle’s Loyalty Points scheme. My position? I don’t have any issue with a scheme that rewards fans who travel regularly to away games, ‘do the miles, earn the points’, I get that. I do, however, have an issue with a scheme that allows me to ‘do the miles’ but then won’t allow me to ‘earn the points’, because I’m only a non-season ticket holder who travels regularly to away games…

The most disappointing aspect of ‘the debate’, from my perspective, was the reaction of some of our more high profile fans. I guess that the current system works for them, or if it doesn’t then they can always blag a ticket, so why rock the boat…?

Ironically, I’d already managed to get a ticket for Preston (albeit it in the home end), but given recent events, I really didn’t fancy it. Things to do, so an extra couple of days at home carried far more appeal than sitting on my hands in Lancashire…

Gateshead International Stadium: Pre-Match…

Anyway, back to the game that I did attend. Gateshead had to settle for a point after surrendering a two goal lead, when they appeared to be cruising. I guess that some consolation could be taken from the fact that they remained unbeaten in the league in October…

First Half: Newcastle Defend…

The feelgood factor is starting to build but with a note of caution attached. This is still Mike Ashley’s football club, and the wheels could fall off spectacularly at any time…

I’ve missed a few games recently, my dad hasn’t been well…

Outside St. James’ Park…

He was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last year; it spread to his arm, then to his back, then finally, to his liver. He died on Monday 17th October at 10.30am, peacefully in bed in his front room. I was holding his hand…

He taught my how to ride a bike, how to bowl overarm and how to kick a ball. He bought me my first black and white shirt. He took me to my first match, January 1981, an FA Fourth Round game against Luton Town. He bought us season tickets in 1983, and we went together until he thought that I was old enough to go with my mates…

He was never as big a fan as I became, he never understood the away trips or the boxes of programmes but it was always something that we had in common. Even in my thirties and forties I would always enjoy the game more when we went together…

A deserved win for Birmingham City, on a damp afternoon at St. Andrew’s…

A first game in almost three weeks, and it was good to be back, even if i did get soaked on the way up from New Street…

Pre-Match: Outside a Damp St. Andrews…

I must have struggled to get my bearings on the ticketing website because I ended up with a ticket in the Main Stand. A proper old fashioned stand it is too, and I think I was possibly the youngest person in it (lots of flasks on display). Fortunately I’d picked a seat further forward than the requisite pillars so had an uninterrupted view of the pitch…

First Half: Birmingham City Attack…

Not a bad game, with Birmingham being worthy winners, although Blackburn could have pinched something right up until the end…

No rain on the way back into the city centre,  and on the train for the forty minute journey home by 17:52. I could get used to these short trips…

Not a short one next weekend though, Gateshead International Stadium…
