30.04.2016… Palace (h)…

Newcastle United 1 Crystal Palace 0

St. James’ Park… Saturday April 30th… 3pm

Attendance: 52,107

Ticket: £33 – Programme: £3

The weekend didn’t start well, a five hour train journey from New Street. My initial train was taken out of service at Derby, the following train saw us all packed in like sardines. A further thirty minute delay at Sheffield just added to the fun. With hindsight though, it was worth it…

It was another nervy first half but Palace certainly had the better of it. When they weren’t wasting time, Karl Darlow was called on to make a couple of good saves.  Going Forward? Well, Sissoko and Colback missed a couple of half-chances…

No panic though…

First Half Action: Dummett Taking a Throw In…

A much better second-half performance followed, an initial period of pressure being capped off by Andros Townsend’s free kick, straight into the top corner. All we had to do was hold on…

Twenty minutes left. A Palace corner, an innocuous looking cross, and then the referee blew. The assumption throughout the ground being for a home free kick, but he was pointing to the spot ( later replays showed a Sissoko handball). Up stepped Cabaye, and following quick look towards the Gallowgate, he hit it to Karl Darlow’s left. Darlow went left, he saved it, chaos ensued. I like to think that the apparent weakness of the effort was for old time’s sake but it wasn’t, it was on target, he meant to score…

The clock counted down, nothing silly, what we had we held. Five minutes of injury time passed without incident. The referee blew for full time and for the first time since February, we were out of the bottom three.  Rafa went to each of his players in turn, still coaching, taking nothing for granted. It’s still an outside chance but it’s getting bigger…

Second Half Action: Townsend Preparing to Score…

I was sat behind David Kelly’s strike in 1992, in the Milburn Stand, as his shot sailed into the Gallowgate goal. Today I was sat in the East Stand, behind Andros Townsend’s free kick. Kelly’s strike proved to be pivotal, let’s just hope that Townsend’s proves to be just as important…

A sell out crowd, three points gained, we fight on…
