The last game of the year for me, taking a break next weekend before heading off to Watford for the FA Cup 3rd round. Will we go through the usual FA Cup motions? I expect so…

So that’s it then, four home league wins in the whole of 2015 and back into the relegation zone. Don’t worry though, Steve’s on top of it, as he claimed in his programme notes that ‘We are heading in the right direction and making progress’. Really…?

Pre Match: Outside a Wet St. James’ Park…

Another unacceptable first half showing, followed by an improved second half performance but Everton took all three points with pretty much the last touch of the game…

Newcastle United 2 Liverpool 0

Attendance: 51,273

Ticket: £39 – Programme: £3

Newcastle United, they never cease to amaze…

A second-half performance of which I didn’t think we were capable. Which poses the question, why can we only raise our game against the supposed ‘big’ teams…?

For the first time in a few weeks the team actually appeared to be trying. I know, guys earning more in a week than most of us earn in a year, actually pulling their fingers out. Wonders will never cease…

Pre-Match: Liverpool Warm Up…

The game itself. The less said about the first half the better, it really was awful. Neither side created very much at all, the major plus from this being that it meant that we went in goalless…

Second-half, and we picked up, gradually building momentum as the half went on. We took the lead on 69 minutes with our first attempt on target, an initial Wijnaldum effort via a Skrtel deflection. Liverpool took this as their cue to wake up, putting together a few decent attacks, and having what looked like a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside. We’ll take that though, in our position, we’ll definitely take that. With 90 minutes complete, the board went up signalling that there would be an additional five, groans all around. Fortunately, not long into the added time we added a a second, Sissoko breaking and passing beautifully to Wijnaldum, who dinked the ball over an on-rushing Mignolet and into an empty net…

Second-Half Action…

A great win, and it would be churlish to suggest otherwise. I’m not sure if this win has ‘averted a crisis’ though, as Steve McClaren tried to suggest post-match. I’m more of the opinion that it’s delayed one…

Most importantly, from an effort perspective, this has set a minimum standard. I expect us to be playing with this level of intensity every week, not just against the alleged ‘bigger’ sides. We need to keep pushing when we go behind too, why did our heads go down so quickly at Selhurst Park…?

Anyway, no match next weekend (giving Spurs a miss), going to do some overtime instead. I really need to spend some time putting money into my wallet rather than taking it out…
