Nottingham Forest 2 Ipswich Town 2

The City Ground… Sunday October 5th… 3pm

Attendance: 24,354

Ticket: £28 – Programme: £3

Stuart Pearce versus Mick McCarthy…

Two games in two days…. I’d forgotten all about this one, so travelled up to Nottingham feeling rather weary after the previous day’s trip to Swansea…

I hadn’t been to the City Ground since the late 1990s; my overriding memory of the place being a Thursday night in May 1996, sat behind the goal watching Ian Woan all but extinguish our title challenge but I’ve always liked the place…

It doesn’t appear to have changed much since those heady days, which is a very good thing. This is a proper football ground, one that has grown organically, stands being added and updated as and when required. As a result, each section looks different, giving the City Ground a look and feel that is unique…

Add to that its location; sat on the banks of the Trent, Trent Bridge and Meadow Lane both visible from within, and you’re left with a very special football ground….

The City Ground, Outside…

Anyway, the game itself, and a chance to see two Newcastle signings, loaned back to Forest… Karl Darlow and James Lascelles (who must already be worrying about whether they’ve made the right choice)…

First half, very quiet, Ipswich going in 1-0 up thanks to a great individual goal from Daryl Murphy…

Second half, Forest picked up, eventually equalising through Robert Tesche following a corner. Daryl Murphy gave Ipswich back the lead with his second goal of the afternoon, a 71st minute header. Forest tied things up again in the 94th minute, Michail Antonio scoring from another corner…

The City Ground, Inside…

A leisurely walk to the station followed, then a sustained focus on staying awake on the train back to Leicester. If I’d slept through then the next stop would have been St. Pancras. Fortunately I didn’t, made it home tired but in one piece; next stop, Nuneaton on Tuesday night…
